ACTIVITIES

It is envisaged that each language SERIAL entity, having identified the systemic racism “promoter(s)” within that particular language, would design appropriate programs and activities best suited for eliminating these factors, in pursuit of the overall SERIAL objective.

As far as the English language is concerned, and as suggested in the book (OBS), a main focus of the organization would be a campaign to eliminate the figurative use of the terms “black” and “white” in expressions in which the former denotes “bad” and the latter “good”, employing various alternative devices, as comprehensively explored in OBS, including possibly substituting other non-race-implicating words for these terms in the figurative expressions concerned.  This, it is reasoned, would, in time, render “black” and “white” value-neutral, erasing any racial “bad” and “good” association mindset in people – and with it any related psychological resistance to the idea of racial parity. It is noted, in this connection, that an entire Chapter of OBS is devoted to outlining and exploring a comprehensive range of strategies, approaches and supportive activities designed to both galvanize and sustain support for such a campaign. These should, naturally, serve as a blue print for the SERIAL program of activities, with necessary updates and adaptations, of course, to reflect emerging digital age communication modes and techniques, including popular social media platforms.

One particular area requiring special attention is mobilization of the academic community, including students of tertiary institutions all over the world – extending, ideally, even to senior secondary school level, if possible. Not only does OBS touch on a wide range of subjects that would interest and engage students of diverse academic disciplines –  politics, African studies, civics, linguistics, philosophy, civil and human rights, constitutional law, social studies, etc. – but this group also is particularly suited to acting as a “multiplier” and “magnifier” of the SERIAL message to the rest of society.
